Dunedin ( and Waitaki ) named one of 25 must visit destinations in Lonely Planets Best in Travel 2027

We’re delighted to see 858 George Street Motel featured in Lonely Planet’s latest guide to spending a weekend in Dunedin and Ōamaru.

Published in September 2026, The Ultimate Weekend in Dunedin and Ōamaru takes travellers through some of the best places to eat, explore and stay across our part of the South Island, from Dunedin’s city streets and Otago Peninsula through to the Moeraki Boulders and Ōamaru.

And when it comes to where to stay in Dunedin, 858 George Street made the list.

Lonely Planet describes us as an award-winning motel close to the University of Otago that “feels decidedly upmarket, but at a fraction of the cost of a hotel.”

It’s always lovely to see our little corner of George Street recognised alongside some of the city’s great attractions, eateries and accommodation, particularly in an international travel publication like Lonely Planet.

Our location has always been one of the things our guests love most about staying with us. We’re right on George Street, within easy walking distance of the University of Otago, Otago Museum, the Botanic Garden, Dunedin Hospital, Forsyth Barr Stadium, cafés, restaurants and the central city.

Of course, location is only part of it. 858 George Street is an architecturally designed, multi-award-winning complex, with a range of studio, executive and family accommodation designed to give guests a comfortable home away from home while they explore Dunedin.

If Lonely Planet’s itinerary has you thinking about a Dunedin getaway of your own, we’d love to welcome you to 858 George Street.
